Understanding Medicare Rebates for Psychology Services
Medicare rebates for psychological services are available through several referral pathways.
The information below explains the most common Medicare options, referral requirements, and general session limits.
Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)
Available for people experiencing a mental health condition
Provides access to Medicare-rebated psychology sessions per calendar year
Mental Health Treatment Plans are indefinite; however, GP reviews are required to access additional sessions
Session limits are counted per calendar year and are shared across psychologists
Eating Disorder Treatment Plan (EDTP)
Available for eligible clients with a diagnosed eating disorder
Provides access to a higher number of Medicare-rebated sessions
Eating Disorder Treatment Plans expire after 12 months, regardless of reviews
A new EDTP is required after expiry to continue accessing Medicare rebates
Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP / EPC)
Available for people with a chronic medical condition
Provides access to a limited number of allied health sessions
Sessions are shared across all allied health providers
Important information
Medicare rebates are subject to eligibility, referral requirements, and Medicare rules. While we assist where possible, clients are responsible for ensuring referrals are valid, eligibility criteria are met, and sessions are available.
